Chapter 2: Space and Noise

The author was decribes the dull atmosphere of the typical company. Silence, no one talking, no one smiling, no one laughing, no one having "fun". The furniture is not movable. Then the author compares it to his own office design. Drilling home the idea of open spaces. Moveable furniture. Noise is good. The office has no walls, offices nor cubes! Everyone is within eyeshot so employees can see each other and talk. Dogs and babies are allowed in the office. Culture! Culture! Culture! Posters, Toys, Disco Ball it's like walking into a science surplus store. Space is lightweight, mobile equipment. All in an effort to be energized and engaged. The visitors love it too! Great PR. The team can change the space to their liking. Working next to one another. The executives would usually go get their corner seculded office, but at the author's company... The exective sits right at the center of all the actions. Super cool! The team decides where the CEO sits. Client conversations happen to with everyone in the room!

Bumping into people and getting into unexpected conversations creates opportunities for regular and

systematic innovations. This may be the single greatest value of a wide open space.
